Levels of automation
The SAE J3016 framework defines six levels, from Level 0 (no automation) to Level 5 (full autonomy).
- Levels 0–2. Require constant human supervision (adaptive cruise, lane centering).
- Levels 3–4. Mark the transition to automated driving and are in controlled testing (urban robotaxis, highway driving).
- Level 5. Full autonomy in all conditions; not yet in commercial use.
Level 2+ is widely available today.
Market growth and drivers
The clearest near-term applications are passenger robotaxis and autonomous truck platooning. The autonomous vehicle market is forecast to grow substantially through 2030, though estimates vary widely across analysts.
- Drivers. Sensing (LiDAR, radar), V2X communication, cloud computing, AI decision-making; supportive policy; consumer demand for safer mobility.
- Considerations. Development cost, regulatory uncertainty, and the rise of mobility-as-a-service.
One illustrative estimate puts the market near $750B by 2030 (Mordor Intelligence, 2025), but credible 2025 forecasts span roughly $210B to $750B by 2030 and disagree by three- to four-fold.
